Next Generation Integrated Floating Wind Optimized for Deep Waters
A competitive and sustainable integrated FOW solution optimized for deep waters that will contribute to accelerate the rate of deployment of floating offshore wind
NextFloat is an awarded project by the European Union’s Horizon Europe Research and Innovation Program. It proposes a disruptive, fully integrated floating offshore wind system that brings several benefits. This will be achieved with a structurally efficient platform with a TLP mooring system, specifically designed for floating wind integrated with a 2-bladed downwind turbine.
Objectives
NextFloat’s main objective is to demonstrate a competitive and sustainable integrated floating offshore wind (FOW) solution optimized for deep waters that will contribute to reduce levelized cost of energy and accelerate the rate of deployment of floating offshore wind.
To achieve these goals, the following specific objectives:
- To demonstrate a cost-efficient 6MW prototype in real operational environment, bringing significant capex reduction to the floating system.
- To ensure a minimal environmental and social impact of floating wind across its life-cycle using sustainable innovative concepts and creating a standard impact assessment methodology.
- To prove the scalability of the integrated solution for larger turbines (14-20MW) optimized for deep waters in different sea basins.
- To detail an industrialization road map for mass production of 14MW system, including the optimization of manufacturing, assembly and installation processes.
- To demonstrate several innovations that will facilitate the O&M and enhance the accessibility to floating systems during its operational lifetime.
- To advance commercial deployment of floating offshore wind energy by providing a development plan for commercial uptake of the solution in the Mediterranean Sea, Atlantic Ocean and Black Sea.
- To encourage synergies and strengthen cooperation among key value stakeholders by specific dissemination, communication, and engagement activities.
Technology
NextFloat proposes a disruptive system specifically developed for floating wind to bring cost-efficiency improvements to the dynamic cable by using aluminum as a conductor material.
